At present, there are more than 50 million people suffering from dementia and related diseases around the world. These diseases are caused by damage in various parts of the human brain that causes problems with the transmission of electrical signals between braincells. This problem negatively affects the daily activities of affected people, and may manifest as sudden memory loss, personality fluctuation, and loss of interactive skills, which can thus be identified as the main symptoms of dementia. Special care must be given to people badly affected by such issues, including continuous monitoring throughout the day, particularly where, as a result of memory impairment, dementia patients may lose their way back to their homes. A proposed system is suggested in this work to help caregivers to locate such individuals, based on Google Maps. To achieve this, the proposed system utilizes multiple existing techniques, including Internet of Things (IoT), Global Positioning System (GPS), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), and Web Apps. A GPS tracking device is attached to the dementia patient to capture and process real-time geolocation data from satellites before this is sent to the monitoring unit. The monitoring website thus continuously receives the patient's geolocation coordinates from the GPS tracker while it is activated, allowing it to identify the patient's real-time location on the map. The matching Web APP is designed to be very secure, being inaccessible by unauthorized people: modern programming languages such as: HTML/CSS, PHP, Java-Script, and AJAX have all thus been used to build the monitoring website. The proposed system has been realistically tested, and use of the web-based monitoring page confirms that the GPS tracker provides accurate positioning on the map. The system thus offers a promising approach to improving the lives of dementia patients and their families in a low cost and reliable manner. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
