Solar energy represents one of the most important renewable energy sources that can be utilized to support the sustainability of healthcare institutions and reduce their dependence on conventional electricity sources. It is particularly important in hospitals and healthcare centers that require a continuous power supply to operate lighting systems, air conditioning, medical devices and equipment, as well as laboratories, sterilization units, and other essential facilities. This contributes to ensuring the continuity of healthcare services with high levels of efficiency and safety. The adoption of solar energy helps reduce conventional electricity consumption and lower carbon emissions resulting from fossil fuel-based energy sources, while also contributing to reducing long-term operational expenses. Solar energy systems can also be integrated with energy storage systems using batteries, providing a backup source of electricity during power outages or emergencies. This enhances healthcare facilities’ ability to continue operating essential equipment and services, particularly in situations that require an immediate and uninterrupted response. The use of solar energy is not limited to electricity generation; it can also be utilized to operate water-heating systems, support indoor and outdoor lighting, and power various electrical equipment and auxiliary services. This integrated approach improves resource management efficiency and reduces waste, particularly when energy systems are connected to smart monitoring technologies that enable consumption levels to be tracked, data to be analyzed, peak demand periods to be identified, and sources of waste to be detected. Such technologies contribute to improving performance and supporting more efficient decision-making. From this perspective, adopting solar energy in healthcare institutions is not merely an environmental approach aimed at reducing negative impacts on the environment; rather, it represents a long-term strategic investment that enhances the efficiency and energy independence of healthcare facilities, reduces operational costs, and strengthens their ability to respond to emergencies. Furthermore, it contributes to building a more sustainable and resilient healthcare system capable of delivering high-quality medical services while conserving resources and reducing its environmental footprint.
