Under the patronage of the President of Almustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hasan Shaker Majdi, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani, a scientific workshop entitled “Diffraction Technology in Liquid Optical Systems for Microbiological Detection” was held on Monday, October 12, 2026, in the Sports Building. Staff members from the Department of Medical Physics at the College of Science attended the workshop, reflecting their interest in student projects and the applications of optical physics in serving society and the environment. The workshop highlighted an innovative project developed by student Mohammed Qaid Jawad under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Ali Jaafar. The project aims to develop a simple, low-cost optical system for exploring indicators of contamination in a single sample droplet. The presentation outlined the system’s design, which uses a high-intensity green light beam and a suspended sample droplet. It also explored refraction, diffraction, and scattering, alongside the analysis of light patterns and shadows formed on a screen, to assess the possibility of detecting impurities and changes within the sample. The presentation demonstrated the potential for using simple components to build a preliminary screening tool, benefiting from the contrast provided by green light to observe details and movement within the droplet. The project represents a promising research concept that requires further testing and comparison with established laboratory methods to verify its accuracy and ability to distinguish biological contamination. The project is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation; Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being; Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; and Goal 4: Quality Education. These connections stem from integrating physical principles with practical applications and exploring affordable solutions for monitoring water quality. The attendance of Medical Physics Department staff reflects the department’s commitment to engaging with scientific initiatives and student innovations, strengthening academic exchange, and supporting the application of physics to practical solutions that serve society.
