The Department of Medical Physics at the College of Science, Almustaqbal University, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Diffraction Technology in Liquid Optical Systems for Microbiological Detection” on Monday, October 12, 2026, in the Sports Building. The workshop was held under the patronage of the University President, Prof. Dr. Hasan Shaker Majdi, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani. The workshop highlighted an innovative project developed by student Mohammed Qaid Jawad, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Ali Jaafar. The project aims to develop a simple, low-cost optical system for exploring indicators of contamination in a single sample droplet using principles of optics. The project involves designing a system that uses a high-intensity green light beam and a suspended sample droplet. It examines refraction, diffraction, scattering, and the light patterns and shadows formed on a screen to assess their potential for detecting impurities and changes within the sample. The workshop demonstrated the potential of using simple components to build a preliminary screening tool, benefiting from the contrast provided by green light to observe details and movement within the droplet. The project represents a promising research concept that requires further testing and comparison with established laboratory methods to verify its accuracy and ability to distinguish biological contamination. The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by exploring low-cost solutions to support water-quality monitoring. It also supports SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through frugal innovation, and SDG 4: Quality Education by connecting physical concepts with practical applications. It may also contribute in the future to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by expanding access to screening tools in resource-limited communities. This workshop forms part of the Department’s efforts to encourage student innovation, promote applied research, and use scientific knowledge to develop solutions that serve society and the environment.
