Literature has never been merely a form of linguistic embellishment or cultural luxury. Rather, it has been a force that shapes nations, guides consciousness, and preserves the identity of peoples. Every great civilisation has left behind great literature because the written word has always preceded the sword and outlasted power.
In Arab history, the poet was never merely a composer of verses. He was the voice of his tribe, its sage and adviser, and the guardian of its dignity. A single poem could elevate the standing of a nation, restrain an oppressor, or document an event that would remain immortal in the memory of history. For this reason, the poet occupied a status comparable to that of leaders, as his influence reached minds before ears.
True literature does not merely entertain the reader; it awakens them. It plants a question, dismantles a misguided idea, and builds another that is more humane. It is an ethical and intellectual message that calls for justice, combats intolerance, and upholds beauty, truth, and human dignity. Therefore, the value of literature is not measured by the number of pages or the extent of reading, but by the impact it leaves on the human being. In its essence, literature is an understanding of the human being, of themselves and of everything that surrounds them.
