The concept of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) refers to an integrated network of medical devices and smart equipment connected to the internet, designed to collect and share health data in real time among healthcare providers. This technology plays a significant role in improving the efficiency of smart hospitals. IoMT systems rely on embedded sensors and connected devices that enable remote monitoring of patients’ vital signs, reducing the need for frequent examination room visits and saving valuable time and effort for medical staff. These devices also facilitate continuous monitoring of chronic conditions and provide instant alerts whenever abnormal changes occur, thereby enhancing preventive care and reducing the risk of sudden health deterioration.
In addition, IoMT contributes to faster diagnosis and more informed treatment decisions by providing accurate and continuously updated patient data. This has a positive impact on reducing waiting times in hospitals and improving the management of medical resources. Through integration with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, healthcare providers can obtain a comprehensive and unified view of a patient’s condition, making collaboration among different medical teams within a hospital—or even across geographically distant healthcare institutions—more effective and efficient.
With the advancement of cloud computing and data analytics technologies, the information collected from IoMT devices can be leveraged to improve overall hospital performance through predictive analytics and intelligent resource planning. For example, these data can be used to forecast bed occupancy requirements, optimize medical staff scheduling, and even predict the spread of infectious diseases within healthcare facilities. Despite its numerous benefits, security and privacy remain among the most significant challenges facing IoMT, as handling sensitive healthcare data requires robust encryption methods and strict access-control policies.
Overall, the Internet of Medical Things represents a fundamental pillar in the development of smart hospitals. It enhances operational efficiency, improves the quality of healthcare services, and paves the way for more proactive, integrated, and patient-centered healthcare systems in the future.
