Universities are considered one of the fundamental pillars in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations, due to their role in generating knowledge, preparing qualified professionals, and promoting community awareness. Academic institutions play a significant role in integrating sustainability concepts into curricula and research activities, thereby enhancing students’ ability to understand environmental, social, and economic challenges. Through scientific research, universities contribute to developing innovative solutions to global issues such as climate change, poverty, and renewable energy. They also implement community initiatives that serve both the environment and local society while promoting the values of environmental citizenship. The university campus itself can serve as a model for applying sustainability practices, such as reducing energy consumption, managing waste, and improving resource efficiency. In addition, partnerships between universities and both public and private sectors help transfer knowledge into practical applications that support sustainability goals. However, this role requires institutional commitment and a strategic vision that integrates sustainable development into all university activities. Thus, the university transforms from merely an educational institution into an active driver of change toward a more just, prosperous, and sustainable future. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first one university in Iraq.
