Prof. Dr. Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi College of Administrative Sciences – Al-Mustaqbal University Unemployment is among the most significant economic and social challenges facing contemporary societies due to its direct impact on income levels, living standards, and social stability. At the same time, food security represents a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, as eliminating hunger and achieving social well-being cannot be realized in the presence of high unemployment rates and limited economic opportunities. Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. Although this goal is primarily associated with the agricultural and food sectors, its dimensions extend beyond these areas to include the provision of productive employment opportunities and improved income levels, both of which are essential for enabling individuals to access sufficient and nutritious food. The relationship between unemployment and hunger is reciprocal. High unemployment rates reduce households’ purchasing power, limiting their ability to secure basic food needs. Conversely, inadequate food security contributes to lower human productivity and reduced workforce efficiency. Therefore, there is a pressing need to adopt integrated development policies that simultaneously address job creation and food security. Investments in agriculture, food-processing industries, and small and medium-sized rural enterprises represent important pathways for tackling unemployment. These sectors have the capacity to absorb large numbers of workers while increasing food production and reducing dependence on imports. Furthermore, supporting innovation and modern agricultural technologies enhances productivity and creates new employment opportunities aligned with the requirements of the modern economy. In this context, universities and academic institutions play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development efforts by preparing qualified professionals capable of addressing economic and social challenges. They also contribute through research and studies that support the development of policies related to employment and food security. Moreover, universities can foster a culture of entrepreneurship and encourage students to establish productive ventures that generate employment opportunities and promote local development. Addressing unemployment extends beyond merely creating jobs; it involves building an economy capable of achieving comprehensive and sustainable development. From this perspective, achieving SDG 2 represents an important step toward building a more stable and equitable society in which individuals enjoy decent work opportunities, food security, and a dignified standard of living, in line with the global vision for sustainable development and the well-being of future generations.
