Professor Dr. Hasan Shakir Majdi, President of Al Mustaqbal University, participated in the IAU-EAIE Internationalisation Leadership Dialogue, held on 8 September 2026 at The Sir Jim McDonald Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom.
The high-level dialogue brought together university presidents and higher education leaders from around the world to discuss internationalisation strategies and the future of higher education in light of current global challenges, while providing a platform for exchanging strategic experiences and best practices.
The President’s participation came following a high-level invitation from the International Association of Universities (IAU) and the European Association for International Education (EAIE), with the aim of strengthening opportunities for international academic cooperation and fostering strategic exchange among higher education leaders worldwide.
The event opened with welcoming remarks from the host institution, the University of Strathclyde, followed by remarks from Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and Professor Mervyn Baker, Executive Director of the European Association for International Education (EAIE).
The keynote session, entitled “Leading Internationalisation in Turbulent Times,” was delivered by Sir Anton Muscatelli, President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The session addressed a range of advanced strategic themes, including the VUCA Prime leadership model, which focuses on managing higher education institutions in volatile and uncertain environments through Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility.
The session also highlighted successful models and strategies for building equitable and sustainable partnerships among universities, in addition to analysing internationalisation markets and reviewing recent data and statistics on global trends in international student mobility and recruitment.
During the dialogue, Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdy took part in a number of interactive sessions and roundtable discussions addressing the future of international partnerships, including mechanisms for selecting strategic partners, joint academic programmes, research collaboration, and strengthening the principle of reciprocity in international higher education cooperation.
The discussions also explored rethinking internationalisation, including the integration of internationalisation into curricula, the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning and academic mobility, and the potential of virtual exchange as a modern and sustainable approach to international education.
The participation also included a number of bilateral meetings between the President of Al Mustaqbal University and leaders of participating academic institutions. Among these was a meeting with Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), during which a commemorative gift representing Iraq’s rich heritage and civilisation was presented to her. The meeting also addressed prospects for future academic and research partnerships.
The participation of the President of Al Mustaqbal University reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to developing its strategic plans, keeping pace with global developments in higher education leadership and management, strengthening international academic partnerships, and expanding its network of international relations.
This engagement further highlights Al Mustaqbal University’s growing role in international higher education dialogue and its commitment to creating sustainable academic and research partnerships with leading institutions worldwide.
