Al-Mustaqbal University Crowns Its National Leadership with the “Athar” Award for the Sustainable University Initiative from the Ministry of Environment

Al-Mustaqbal University achieved a new national milestone in its leadership journey by receiving the “Athar” Award for the Sustainable University Initiative, granted by the Ministry of Environment. The award recognizes the university’s leading role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and embedding sustainability concepts in higher education and society, in line with national and international development priorities. The award ceremony took place during a major official celebration organized by the Ministry of Environment in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It was attended by the Minister of Environment, Dr. Hilal Al-Askari, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Dr. Haider Abdul Dahad, along with a distinguished group of deputy ministers, university presidents, deans, vice presidents, and prominent academic and official figures. In his speech during the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Haider Abdul Dahad, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, emphasized that Al-Mustaqbal University represents a pioneering national model in adopting sustainability as a comprehensive institutional practice. He praised the university’s global achievement, including ranking first worldwide in the category of “Affordable and Clean Energy” (SDG 7), and placing within the 201–300 global range among more than 2,000 universities in the Times Impact 2025 ranking for the Sustainable Development Goals. This recognition crowns a series of strategic and pioneering initiatives undertaken by Al-Mustaqbal University in the fields of renewable energy, climate action, waste management and recycling, sustainable cities, as well as applied scientific research and impactful community partnerships that have strengthened the culture of sustainability both on campus and beyond. Al-Mustaqbal University participated in the ceremony with an official delegation, represented by Prof. Dr. Muzaffar Sadiq Al-Zuheiri on behalf of the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi. The delegation also included Dr. Samir Badrawi, Director of the Cultural Relations Department, and Engineer Khalid Al-Salhi, Head of the Sustainability Division. Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, stated on this occasion that the “Athar” Award represents both national and international recognition of the university’s scientific and humanitarian stature. He emphasized the university’s firm commitment to sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility, noting that Al-Mustaqbal University will continue to develop its initiatives and strategic programs in line with Iraq Vision 2030, particularly in the areas of clean energy, quality education, and building sustainable cities.
