As part of the academic and educational programme of the Department of Biochemistry at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, practical lectures in Kinetics continue for second-year students, aiming to strengthen the practical application of scientific concepts introduced during theoretical lectures and provide students with essential laboratory experience in understanding chemical reactions and their kinetic behaviour. The practical session focused on fundamental concepts of chemical kinetics, which deals with studying reaction rates and the factors affecting them. Students were introduced to the relationship between reactant concentrations, reaction time, and reaction rates, as well as the influence of different experimental conditions, including temperature, concentration, and the nature of reactants, on the progress and rates of chemical reactions. The laboratory activities also emphasized familiarizing students with the basic principles of handling laboratory equipment and instruments used in experimental procedures, preparing chemical solutions, and working with chemical substances in accordance with laboratory instructions. Particular attention was given to accurate recording of experimental observations, analysing obtained data, and interpreting results to reach scientifically valid conclusions. Kinetics is an important subject in the field of Biochemistry due to its close connection with understanding various biological processes, particularly enzymatic reactions and the mechanisms governing biochemical activities within living systems. Studying reaction rates and the factors influencing them provides students with an essential scientific foundation for understanding metabolic pathways and cellular biochemical processes. These practical lectures reflect the Department of Biochemistry's commitment to integrating theoretical knowledge with laboratory applications and providing an educational environment that enables students to apply scientific principles through experimentation. Such activities contribute to developing students' laboratory skills, analytical abilities, scientific reasoning, and readiness for future professional and research-related responsibilities. The emphasis on practical education and laboratory training supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, through providing high-quality scientific education that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience. It also contributes to SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by developing scientific and technical competencies and encouraging experimental thinking and innovation. Furthermore, it supports SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, through promoting the responsible use of chemicals and laboratory resources and encouraging safe and sustainable laboratory practices.
