The Department of Media at the College of Arts and Humanities at Al-Mustaqbal University held a specialised workshop entitled “Common Errors in Media Language” on Sunday morning, 1 November 2026. The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr Hamza Ubeis Al-Janabi and Lecturer Dr Munther Ali Ahmed, and attended by the department’s academic and administrative staff, as well as students. The workshop addressed the most prominent linguistic, grammatical, morphological, semantic, and spelling errors that frequently occur in spoken, written, and visual media discourse. Its topics covered several aspects of language use, including accurate grammatical inflection, correct plural forms, verb transitivity, and derivation. Particular attention was also given to semantic accuracy and the problems arising from using words outside their appropriate contexts. A dedicated section examined spelling errors and punctuation, given their direct impact on textual coherence and the credibility of media messages. During the workshop, Lecturer Dr Munther Ali Ahmed emphasised the significant responsibility borne by media professionals, explaining that when they make mistakes, they contribute to spreading incorrect language, whereas accuracy helps promote correct and proper language. He stressed that academic and administrative staff have a responsibility to support media students in developing a heightened awareness of the importance of accuracy when preparing media content, and in making proper language an integral part of their professional and ethical development. The workshop’s final recommendations stressed that linguistic proofreading should become a daily institutional practice involving all teams before publication or broadcasting. They also affirmed that preserving linguistic standards in media discourse is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated efforts among editors, presenters, directors, and publishing platforms.
