The Department of Biochemistry at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, continues to conduct practical laboratory sessions in Chemical Kinetics for second-year students during the 2026–2027 academic year. The sessions are supervised by Dr. Aseel Amer Hadi and aim to strengthen students’ practical understanding of fundamental chemical principles while developing their laboratory skills, scientific reasoning, and ability to connect theoretical concepts with experimental applications in biochemistry.
Chemical kinetics is an essential branch of chemistry concerned with the rates of chemical reactions, the mechanisms through which reactions occur, and the factors that influence their progress over time. Understanding these principles enables students to investigate how reactant concentrations, temperature, and the nature of chemical substances affect reaction rates. These concepts are particularly relevant to biochemistry, where numerous biological processes depend on carefully regulated chemical reactions that sustain cellular functions and metabolic activity.
During the practical sessions, students are introduced to the fundamental experimental principles used to investigate reaction rates and monitor changes occurring during chemical reactions. They develop an understanding of the relationship between reactant concentrations and reaction rates, as well as the importance of controlling experimental conditions when conducting laboratory investigations. Through these activities, students can observe how changes in specific variables influence reaction behaviour and learn how experimental evidence can be used to explain chemical phenomena.
The laboratory component also provides students with opportunities to develop essential practical competencies, including the appropriate use of laboratory equipment, accurate measurement, systematic observation, and the organized recording of experimental data. Emphasis is placed on following experimental procedures carefully, maintaining suitable laboratory conditions, and analysing observations according to established scientific principles. These practices help students develop analytical thinking and improve their ability to interpret experimental results and relate them to the theoretical concepts presented during lectures.
Chemical kinetics has particular significance for biochemistry students because the principles governing chemical reaction rates are closely related to the functioning of biological systems. Many biochemical reactions are regulated by enzymes, which accelerate specific reactions and play indispensable roles in metabolism and cellular activity. A sound understanding of reaction kinetics therefore provides an important foundation for studying enzyme activity, the factors affecting enzymatic reactions, and the mechanisms through which biological systems regulate biochemical processes.
Furthermore, the practical study of chemical kinetics prepares students for more advanced topics in their academic programme, including enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways, and biochemical laboratory analysis. By learning how reaction rates are measured and interpreted, students develop a stronger conceptual basis for understanding the quantitative aspects of biochemical reactions and the importance of experimental conditions in obtaining reliable scientific results.
Under the supervision of Dr. Aseel Amer Hadi, the practical sessions provide guidance in understanding the scientific principles behind laboratory experiments and the significance of each stage of the experimental process. The sessions also encourage students to engage actively with the subject, discuss their observations, examine the relationship between theoretical predictions and experimental findings, and develop a more systematic approach to solving scientific problems.
In addition to strengthening technical skills, these laboratory activities promote scientific discipline, accuracy, and responsible laboratory practice. Students are encouraged to recognize the importance of reliable measurements, careful data handling, and objective interpretation of results. Such competencies are fundamental to laboratory-based scientific education and provide a valuable foundation for future work in biochemical research, analytical laboratories, and other fields related to the chemical and biological sciences.
The continuation of practical laboratory sessions reflects the Department of Biochemistry’s commitment to enhancing the quality of academic education through the integration of theoretical instruction and hands-on experience. By providing students with opportunities to apply chemical principles in a laboratory setting, the department supports the development of graduates with a strong scientific foundation and the practical abilities required to understand increasingly complex biochemical processes.
Through these educational activities, the Department of Biochemistry at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, continues to promote practical learning, strengthen students’ laboratory competencies, and prepare them for advanced study and future professional opportunities in biochemistry and related scientific disciplines.
