For example, soil recovered from a suspect's footwear may exhibit microbial similarities to soil collected at a crime scene. Such findings may support an investigative association, but they cannot independently establish that the suspect visited the location. Similar microbial communities may occur in different environments, and contamination or environmental variation can influence analytical results. This field is particularly relevant to investigations involving body relocation, concealed evidence, and the movement of individuals or vehicles between different environments. Nevertheless, forensic microbial geolocation remains an emerging approach that requires extensive validation, standardized procedures, and reliable reference databases.
