Reading is one of the most important means by which an individual can acquire knowledge, broaden their horizons, and understand the world around them. It is not merely a way to obtain information; rather, it is an intellectual activity that contributes to shaping an individual’s character and developing their capacity for analysis, critical thinking, and decision-making. Through reading, one encounters diverse cultures and experiences, which fosters a greater ability to accept others and respect their differences. Furthermore, reading cultivates awareness of the social, health, economic, and environmental issues that impact the life of a society. An individual who reads is better equipped to understand problems and participate in finding appropriate solutions. Books, articles, and reliable digital resources help promote values such as cooperation, tolerance, responsibility, and respect for the law. Reading also serves as a defense against rumors and misinformation, as it trains individuals to verify sources before accepting or disseminating information. It enhances language proficiency, expands vocabulary, and improves one’s ability to express ideas, communicate effectively, and discuss opinions objectively. The habit of reading often begins within the family, where children are encouraged to develop a love for books from a young age, and it is subsequently nurtured through schools and universities. Libraries and cultural institutions also play a vital role by providing access to books and organizing activities that promote reading. While e-books and digital libraries have made knowledge more accessible, they necessitate the careful selection of credible sources. The benefits of reading extend beyond the individual, as the knowledge gained is shared with their family, workplace, and broader social circle. A society that reads is better prepared to understand its rights and responsibilities, and to navigate various crises and changes. Reading contributes to fostering development and encouraging creativity and innovation by allowing individuals to explore, build upon, and refine existing ideas and experiences. It also offers people the opportunity to gain self-understanding, improve their behavior, and enhance their relationships with others. Consequently, it is essential to develop libraries, ensure the availability of books, and promote initiatives that make reading accessible to everyone. Building a conscious society begins with an individual who reads—someone capable of critical thinking, engaging in meaningful discussion, and distinguishing between truth and misinformation. In this sense, reading serves as a genuine force for building a society that is more knowledgeable, collaborative, and prepared for the future.
