The President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, participated in the proceedings of the 2026 General Assembly of the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED), hosted by the University of Barcelona in Spain on 7 and 8 October 2026. The event coincided with the celebration of the union’s 35th anniversary and brought together a wide range of university presidents and representatives from Mediterranean and European countries.
The meetings addressed and approved the main themes and strategic priorities of the union’s action plan, focusing on the development of higher education and scientific research across six key areas: higher education governance; digital education and support for technological transformation; intercultural dialogue; graduate employability and skills development; higher education in emergencies and crises; and strengthening the role of universities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and protecting the environment.
The General Assembly also featured dedicated sessions presenting proposals and outlining the vision for the Erasmus+ programmes for 2028–2034, mechanisms for enhancing academic mobility for students and teaching staff, capacity building, international partnerships, and the provision of master’s scholarships and Jean Monnet Actions. Al-Mustaqbal University is the only private university in Iraq to have successfully secured a Jean Monnet grant under European Union programmes.
During his participation, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi affirmed Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to actively engaging in international partnerships and implementing academic best practices. He emphasised that these efforts strengthen the university’s standing in international forums and support national strategies for advancing education, scientific research, and cross-border knowledge exchange.
