Short educational videos have become increasingly popular in university education. They present information concisely and in a visually engaging manner. In learning English, short videos can help students develop various language skills. They expose learners to English pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and everyday expressions. Students can listen to native or fluent English speakers and observe how the language is used in authentic contexts. Additionally, visual cues help students grasp the meanings of unfamiliar words and expressions. Short videos can be particularly beneficial for students who find lengthy educational materials difficult to follow. The brevity of these videos helps maintain students' attention during learning activities. Furthermore, students can watch the same video multiple times according to their individual needs, pausing the video, rewinding difficult segments, and taking notes. This flexibility makes the learning process more adaptable to individual learning styles. Educational videos can also introduce cultural information that may not be available in traditional textbooks. Understanding these cultural contexts enables students to communicate in English more appropriately. Instead of merely asking students to watch the videos passively, instructors can integrate short videos into classroom activities. For instance, students can summarize the main idea, identify new vocabulary, answer comprehension questions, or discuss the video's topic with their peers. These activities help connect listening practice with speaking, writing, and critical thinking. However, not all videos available on the internet are suitable for educational purposes. Therefore, instructors should carefully select materials that are accurate, clear, and appropriate for the students' proficiency level. The content should also align directly with the course's learning objectives. Another potential issue is that students may become passive viewers if video viewing is not accompanied by an interactive learning activity. Thus, instructors must pair video content with meaningful tasks and discussions. When used effectively, short educational videos can make learning English more engaging and accessible, while providing students with valuable additional exposure to the language outside the classroom environment. Consequently, incorporating carefully chosen short educational videos into university English courses can contribute significantly to creating a more interactive and effective learning experience.
