Al-Mustaqbal University hosted the third meeting of the team responsible for preparing the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document at the local level and assessing and managing climate risks in Babylon Governorate. The meeting was attended by representatives of government institutions, relevant sectors, and civil society organisations, alongside representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the international organisation CRS, and Al-Aghsan Foundation, with the aim of strengthening sustainable climate action. During his reception of Mr. Makki Hadi Al-Shammari, Director General of the Environmental Protection and Improvement Department in the Middle Euphrates Region; Mr. Ghaith Al-Zuhairi, Representative of the Ministry of Environment; and Dr. Khadija Al-Jabri, Representative and Coordinator of CRS in Iraq, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, affirmed the university’s readiness to provide the necessary support to ensure the success of the team’s work. He stressed the importance of unifying governmental, academic, and community efforts to address the impacts of climate change and move towards implementing realistic, measurable, and scalable solutions. In a statement on behalf of the University Presidency, Professor Dr. Muzaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, reviewed the institution’s key sustainability practices, including expanding the use of clean energy, increasing green coverage, source separation of waste, and promoting environmentally friendly transportation and smart agriculture. These efforts have contributed to the university achieving advanced positions in global rankings related to the Sustainable Development Goals. For his part, Engineer Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Director of the Sustainable Development Division and a member of the working team, noted that the meeting focused on identifying priorities and climate mitigation and adaptation projects in Babylon in preparation for securing funding. Participants discussed the governorate’s key challenges, including water scarcity, rising temperatures, drought, desertification, agricultural land degradation, and dust storms, as well as the importance of developing integrated solutions covering water resource management, renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, afforestation, waste management, and institutional capacity building.
