Type 2 Diabetes: A Preventable and Manageable Disease Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and represents a major health challenge for modern societies. This type of diabetes occurs when the body loses its ability to use insulin effectively. Over time, the pancreas may produce less insulin, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. The number of individuals affected has also increased significantly worldwide over recent decades. How Does Type 2 Diabetes Develop? Type 2 diabetes often begins with insulin resistance, in which the body’s cells—particularly those in the muscles, liver, and adipose tissue—become less responsive to insulin. As a result, glucose remains in the bloodstream at elevated levels. Initially, the pancreas attempts to compensate by producing more insulin. However, over time, pancreatic beta cells may undergo functional deterioration, reducing their ability to secrete sufficient insulin and consequently contributing to increased blood glucose levels. Research indicates that insulin resistance and impaired beta-cell function represent the two major mechanisms underlying the development of type 2 diabetes. Other factors may also contribute, including chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and disturbances in lipid metabolism. What Are the Risk Factors for Developing Type 2 Diabetes? Type 2 diabetes does not result from a single cause; rather, it develops through the interaction of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Major risk factors include: Obesity and overweight. Physical inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle. An unhealthy dietary pattern. Advancing age. A family history of diabetes. Certain associated metabolic disorders. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases when several of these factors are present simultaneously. Why May Type 2 Diabetes Remain Undiagnosed at an Early Stage? Type 2 diabetes is often characterized by mild or nonspecific symptoms during its early stages. Consequently, individuals may experience elevated blood glucose levels for a prolonged period without being diagnosed. Symptoms that may occur when blood glucose levels become elevated include: Excessive thirst. Frequent urination. Fatigue and exhaustion. Blurred vision. Unexplained weight loss in some cases. Therefore, regular medical screening is essential, particularly for individuals with known risk factors. What Are the Consequences of Poorly Controlled Diabetes? The effects of diabetes extend beyond elevated blood glucose levels. Persistent hyperglycemia can damage blood vessels and nerves, increasing the risk of complications that may affect multiple organs. Major complications include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, eye disorders, and diabetic foot problems, which may become serious if not appropriately managed. Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Prevented? In many cases, the onset of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through adopting a healthy lifestyle. Important preventive measures include: Regular physical activity: Exercise improves insulin sensitivity and contributes to maintaining a healthy body weight. A balanced diet: Following a nutritious dietary pattern with reduced intake of added sugars and unhealthy fats can help lower the risk. Maintaining a healthy weight: Achieving and maintaining an appropriate body weight can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Regular screening: Periodic medical examinations can help detect elevated blood glucose levels at an early stage. Avoiding smoking: Smoking cessation is an important component of a healthy lifestyle and may contribute to reducing the risk of diabetes and its complications. The World Health Organization emphasizes that a healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and avoiding tobacco use can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Concluding Remarks Type 2 diabetes is a complex chronic disease influenced by multiple genetic, metabolic, and lifestyle-related factors. However, it can often be prevented or effectively managed through early detection, appropriate healthcare, and sustained lifestyle modifications. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and risk factors of type 2 diabetes contributes to improving preventive strategies, developing more effective approaches to diagnosis and treatment, and reducing the burden of diabetes-related complications.
