Henna (Lawsonia inermis) is an evergreen shrub belonging to the family Lythraceae. It is particularly widespread in warm, dry, and semi-arid regions and is well known for its cosmetic, pigment-producing, and traditional medicinal importance.
The plant has branched stems that may become woody with age. Its leaves are relatively small, oval-shaped, and green in color. Henna leaves contain a variety of chemical compounds, with lawsone being the most important pigment compound. Lawsone is primarily responsible for the reddish-orange color produced when henna powder is applied.
Henna produces small, fragrant white or light-pink flowers arranged in inflorescences containing numerous small flowers. After flowering, small fruits develop that contain many seeds.
The leaves are harvested, dried, and then ground to produce henna powder, which has traditionally been used to dye hair, skin, and fabrics. Henna has a long history of cosmetic and cultural use in different parts of the world. Its leaves also contain phenolic compounds and other phytochemicals whose antioxidant and antimicrobial properties have been investigated.
Henna can tolerate relatively high temperatures and is capable of growing in dry environments when suitable conditions are available. It requires adequate light and well-drained soil for proper growth.
Henna represents a clear example of the importance of pigment-producing plants in human life. It combines botanical, chemical, cosmetic, economic, and cultural characteristics, making it a highly suitable plant for study within the field of medicinal and dye plants.
