Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is a fast-growing shrub belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is characterized by a distinctive appearance due to its large, deeply lobed leaves and branched stems. The plant can reach a considerable size under suitable environmental conditions. Its leaves are large and distinctly palmately lobed, with their color varying from green to dark red depending on the variety. Castor bean produces inflorescences containing male and female flowers. Following fertilization, spherical or oval fruits develop, covered with protuberances or spines. The fruits contain large seeds with a characteristic mottled appearance, which are the primary source of castor oil. Castor oil contains a high proportion of ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that gives the oil distinctive chemical and physical properties and makes it highly important industrially. Despite the significant industrial value of castor oil, the seeds themselves contain toxic compounds, most notably the protein ricin. Therefore, the seeds must not be consumed and should be handled with caution. The plant can grow in a relatively wide range of environments and is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental plant because of its large leaves and distinctive appearance. Castor bean is also an important subject for studying oil-producing plants, plant chemical composition, and industrial applications. The study of this plant demonstrates the importance of distinguishing between beneficial plant compounds and toxic compounds present within the same plant, making it a suitable model for botanical, chemical, and industrial studies.
