The human soul descends into this universe between two distant extremes sight that touches the appearances of things and insight that is commanded to verify and contemplate the dominion of the heavens and the earth Yet this human mind despite its gravity and stature is not a polished mirror that reflects abstract truth as it is Rather it is a complex apparatus of filtering and interpretation designed in its original nature to help man live and endure life with the least possible cognitive cost From the womb of this constant striving for simplification Cognitive Biases creep in They form a hidden architecture of perception that shapes human convictions directs his decisions and deceives him into believing he is right while he is deep in error The Noble Qur’an in its miraculous address to humanity did not treat the mind as an infallible entity Instead it dissected its flaws and whims in clear Arabic Thus the divine obligation to investigate and reflect came to liberate the brain from its self-deceptions and to bring it out of the darkness of conjecture into the light of certainty Among the most prominent biases affirmed by the Noble Qur’an are First Confirmation Bias The Following of Whim and the Echo Chambers The human mind instinctively gravitates toward what confirms its prior convictions and marginalizes or reinterprets everything that contradicts them It does not seek truth to follow it but seeks evidence to justify its pre-existing position fleeing from cognitive dissonance which causes it anxiety and disturbance This meaning is clarified in the Qur’an in its description of those who made their intellectual preconceptions a barrier between them and the truth Allah Almighty says And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences they say This is not but a man who wishes to avert you from that which your fathers were worshipping Saba 43 Here confirmation bias appears in clinging to the heritage of the fathers and constantly searching for what supports it even when clear proofs shine like the sun In the modern age of knowledge this trick has transformed into what are known as echo chambers on social media platforms where a person becomes enclosed within algorithms that feed him only what his mind desires so his fanaticism for his illusion increases Second Negativity Bias The Instinct of Caution and Narrow Vision The mind possesses hypersensitivity toward dangers and threats One insult may remain stuck in memory for years while a hundred words of praise fade into oblivion This cognitive trick goes back to primitive survival mechanisms where attention to danger ensured survival from death while overlooking reward was merely the loss of a passing opportunity But when this bias dominates a person it bequeaths him gloominess and ingratitude for blessings This is the whisper warned against by the Almighty when He clarifies the nature of the whisperer who exaggerates fear and ignores mercy as in His saying Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty Al-Baqarah 268 The promise of poverty relies on negativity bias to shackle human will and drag him into a tunnel of perpetual anxiety while faith calls him to broaden the horizon of insight to encompass the vast spaces of grace and mercy Third The Illusion of Truth Effect The Authority of Repetition and the Dominion of Rumor One of the strangest tricks of the mind is its tendency to believe information simply because it is repeated to its ears without considering the validity of its source or the logic of its proof In psychology this is called cognitive fluency the brain translates the ease of processing repeated information as definitive proof of its truth The Noble Qur’an strongly condemned this fragile perceptual behavior especially in the incident of Al-Ifk which relied on repetition and rumor The Almighty said When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of and thought it was insignificant while it was great in the sight of Allah An-Nur 15 The expression you received it with your tongues depicts with astonishing precision the transmission and repetition of information without passing it through the filter of reason and verification warning against verbal repetition turning into false certainty that destroys truths Fourth The Sunk Cost Fallacy The Stubbornness of Loss and the Shackles of the Past A person falls like a prisoner into the trap of a wrong decision he made in the past and continues to waste his time money or effort for no reason except that he begrudges what he has already spent of his life or wealth on that path It is the intense aversion to admitting defeat that drives a person to increase loss instead of cutting it The Qur’an depicts this psychological trick in the attitudes of the arrogant who were taken by sinful pride preferring destruction over admitting the falsehood of that in which they spent their lives The Almighty says And when it is said to them Follow what Allah has revealed they say Rather we will follow that which we found our fathers doing Even though their fathers understood nothing nor were they guided Al-Baqarah 170 Continuing to follow what they found their fathers upon is nothing but surrender to a sunk cost which closes before them the doors of recovery and transformation toward the truth Fifth The Framing Effect The Deception of Wording and the Magic of Context A person’s response to the same information differs depending on the frame in which it is placed The same statement may provoke fear or bring reassurance based on its verbal formulation Saying the success rate is 90 percent inspires confidence while saying the failure rate is 10 percent raises apprehension even though the numerical truth is one The Qur’an pointed to the danger of this framing and how Satan used it to deceive Adam peace be upon him by framing the forbidden tree in the context of eternity and a kingdom that never decays From that is His saying Then Satan whispered to him he said O Adam shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that will not fade Taha 120 Satan did not change the nature of the tree but he changed its perceptual frame moving it in the human mind from the circle of disobedience and prohibition to the circle of eternity and dominion Sixth The Spotlight Effect The Centrality of the Self and the Magnification of Scrutiny A person constantly lives under the illusion that everyone around him is watching his actions monitoring his slips and noticing the minutest details of his appearance and behavior This illusion arises from egocentric perception where a person assumes he is the axis of the world while the truth is that every individual is immersed in the vortex of his own illusion The Qur’an alerted us to belittle the size of man in this world calling for humility and relief from the complex of imaginary human scrutiny From that is His saying And do not walk upon the earth exultantly Indeed you will never tear the earth apart and you will never reach the mountains in height Al-Isra 37 Realizing the insignificance of human size before the greatness of the universe liberates the soul from the spotlight effect and redirects its fear and shame from the gazes of creation to sincere awe of the Creator The human mind with all its biases and tricks was not created to be an absolute ruler by whim Rather it was commanded to submit to the methodology of verification and insight And faith-based insight does not suffice with exposing these biases it also provides their direct remedy in a comprehensive Qur’anic law that regulates the movement of knowledge and perception And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge Indeed the hearing the sight and the heart about all those will be questioned Al-Isra 36 With this divine obligation the mind transforms from a submissive vehicle driven by mental shortcuts and self-deception into a refined critical tool that shields its owner from misguidance and ensures his steady and certain walk on the path of truth and light Dr.Saeed Murad
