Environmental Forensics is a multidisciplinary field that combines environmental science, analytical chemistry, and forensic science to identify pollution sources and establish links between environmental contamination and responsible activities or parties. It has become increasingly important in investigations involving illegal waste disposal, water and soil contamination, oil spills, and chemical pollution. Environmental forensic investigations rely on the analysis of the chemical and molecular characteristics of pollutants, including hydrocarbons, heavy metals, pesticides, and organic compounds. Advanced techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS, ICP-MS, and stable isotope analysis can be used to identify pollutants and compare their chemical signatures with potential sources. The Role of Pollution Evidence in Criminal Investigations Pollution evidence can help investigators answer four main questions: 1. What is the pollutant? Chemical analysis identifies the substances and compounds present in environmental samples. 2. What is its potential source? The chemical or isotopic signature of the pollutant can be compared with samples collected from potential sources. 3. How did the pollutant reach the contaminated site? Hydrological, geological, and environmental transport data can help reconstruct the movement of contaminants. 4. Can the pollutant be linked to a responsible party? Scientific findings can be combined with physical, documentary, and operational evidence to establish a stronger connection. Importantly, the presence of pollution alone does not prove criminal responsibility. Investigators must also consider alternative sources, transport pathways, sample quality, and the reliability of analytical results. Chain of Custody The Chain of Custody is a critical component of environmental evidence. Samples must be properly documented from the moment they are collected until their transportation, storage, and laboratory analysis. Proper procedures are necessary to demonstrate that samples have not been contaminated, altered, or tampered with. Quality assurance and quality control procedures, including blanks, duplicates, reference samples, and instrument calibration, are also essential for ensuring the reliability of forensic results. Challenges Environmental forensic investigations face several challenges, including the degradation and weathering of pollutants, multiple possible contamination sources, and the lack of original samples from suspected sources. Therefore, investigators should avoid relying on a single analytical technique and instead integrate chemical, isotopic, environmental, and traditional forensic evidence.
