Agave (Agave spp.) is a group of succulent plants belonging to the family Asparagaceae. Its species are particularly widespread in arid and semi-arid regions, where they possess numerous adaptations that enable them to survive under conditions of water scarcity and high temperatures.
The plant typically consists of a large basal rosette of thick, succulent leaves that function to store water within their tissues. In many species, the leaves have margins equipped with teeth or spines, in addition to a strong terminal spine at the tip of each leaf. These structures help protect the plant from herbivorous animals. The leaves also possess a waxy layer that reduces water loss, and some Agave species use a photosynthetic pathway known as Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM), which allows the stomata to open during cooler periods of the day and reduces water loss through evaporation.
Agave is characterized by relatively slow growth, but it can store large amounts of water and survive under harsh environmental conditions. Some species flower only once during their lifetime after reaching maturity. They produce a long flowering stalk bearing numerous flowers, after which the plant may die in some species following flowering and seed production, while new offsets can also develop.
Agave has considerable economic importance, as some species are used in the production of plant fibers, food products, and various industrial products. It also plays an ecological role by helping stabilize soil and providing food resources for certain insects and pollinators. Agave represents an excellent model for studying the adaptations of succulent plants to drought and the economic utilization of desert plants.
