Al-Mustaqbal University celebrated the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies through a scientific awareness event organized by the Sustainability Division at the University Presidency and held in the university gardens. The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and attended by Prof. Dr. Muthaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, along with a number of department and division directors, university staff, and students. The event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of air quality and highlight the risks of air pollution and its impacts on human health and the environment. The event addressed the importance of maintaining air quality as one of the fundamental pillars of public health and ecosystem sustainability. It also highlighted the major sources of air pollution and their associated health and environmental impacts, while presenting a range of sustainable practices and behaviors that can contribute to reducing pollutants and improving the quality of the university environment. During the event, Prof. Dr. Muthaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi emphasized the importance of utilizing international days and occasions to promote scientific and community awareness of the major issues and challenges facing the world, particularly climate change and environmental pollution. He noted that air pollution represents a significant environmental challenge with direct impacts on human health and quality of life, underscoring the need to strengthen environmental awareness and intensify scientific and community efforts to mitigate its effects. Dr. Muthaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi also pointed out that Al-Mustaqbal University places considerable emphasis on monitoring air quality indicators and the levels of gases and pollutants resulting from various activities. He explained that the Future Center for Energy Research plays an important role in this field through a specialized air-quality monitoring station that provides scientific data and indicators on pollutant levels. These data contribute to establishing a database that can support academic studies and research related to the environment, climate, energy, and public health. He further explained that continuous scientific monitoring of air quality provides accurate information that helps researchers understand changes in pollutant levels and assess the environmental impact of various activities. It also supports researchers and postgraduate students in developing applied studies that contribute to scientific solutions to environmental challenges and promote data-driven decision-making. For his part, Eng. Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Head of the Sustainability Division, explained that Al-Mustaqbal University is working to reduce sources of air pollution and improve the university environment through an integrated set of sustainable initiatives and practices. These include expanding green spaces, encouraging green transportation, improving waste management and treatment methods, and implementing awareness programs targeting students and university staff to strengthen their individual and institutional responsibility toward the environment. This event is part of Al-Mustaqbal University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its academic and community role in addressing environmental and climate challenges and to utilize knowledge and scientific research in supporting sustainable solutions. These efforts are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being, SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13 on Climate Action.
