Normal flora bacteria are microorganisms that naturally live on and inside the human body without causing disease. These bacteria are found in areas such as the skin, mouth, intestines, and respiratory tract. Although many people associate bacteria with illness, normal flora play an important role in maintaining health and protecting the body. The digestive system contains billions of beneficial bacteria that help break down food and absorb nutrients. Some of these bacteria produce vitamins such as vitamin K and certain B vitamins. They also assist in maintaining a healthy balance inside the intestines. Normal flora bacteria help protect the body against harmful microorganisms. They compete with disease-causing bacteria for food and space, making it difficult for dangerous microbes to grow. Some beneficial bacteria also produce substances that kill harmful organisms. The immune system is influenced by normal flora. These bacteria help stimulate immune responses and support the development of immunity. Research has shown that disturbances in normal flora may contribute to allergies, digestive disorders, and weakened immunity. Antibiotics can sometimes destroy beneficial bacteria along with harmful ones. This may lead to problems such as diarrhea or fungal infections. For this reason, antibiotics should only be used when necessary and under medical supervision. Probiotics are products containing beneficial bacteria that may help restore the natural balance of microorganisms in the body. Yogurt and fermented foods are common sources of probiotics. Scientists continue studying normal flora because of their important relationship with human health. Maintaining healthy bacteria through balanced nutrition and proper hygiene contributes to disease prevention and overall well-being. Al-Mustaqbal University – the first university in Iraq.
