The rapid development of medical technology has brought about significant transformations in the healthcare sector. Modern medical devices, diagnostic systems, laboratory equipment, and smart software have become essential components of hospitals and healthcare institutions. Despite the important role these technologies play in improving the quality of healthcare services, diagnostic accuracy, and speed of care delivery, their increasing use is accompanied by environmental impacts related to energy, water, and raw material consumption, as well as the generation of medical and electronic waste and the use of certain chemicals. Therefore, assessing the environmental impact of medical technology has become an essential requirement for achieving sustainability in the healthcare sector. Environmental impact assessment of medical technology refers to the study and analysis of the environmental effects resulting from the use of healthcare devices, equipment, and technologies throughout their various life-cycle stages, beginning with manufacturing, transportation, installation, and operation, and extending to maintenance and disposal at the end of their operational life. This assessment helps healthcare institutions identify sources of environmental impact and develop practical solutions to reduce them while maintaining the efficiency and safety of medical services provided to patients. Energy consumption is one of the most important aspects that should be considered when assessing the environmental impact of medical devices. Many diagnostic and therapeutic devices, such as medical imaging systems, laboratory equipment, and cooling and storage systems, require continuous energy supplies to operate efficiently. Healthcare institutions can analyze the energy consumption patterns of these devices and identify less efficient equipment, then gradually replace them with more energy-efficient technologies or improve their operation and maintenance mechanisms. This can contribute to reducing energy consumption and associated emissions. The environmental impact of medical technology is not limited to energy consumption but also includes medical and electronic waste. The rapid development of healthcare devices can lead to the frequent replacement of some equipment as newer technologies emerge, potentially increasing the volume of electronic waste, some components of which may contain materials requiring safe management and treatment. Therefore, achieving sustainability requires clear policies for managing equipment at the end of its operational life, encouraging reuse or recycling whenever this is possible and safe, and ensuring the proper disposal of materials that cannot be recycled. The use of chemicals and consumable materials in laboratories and healthcare facilities is another important aspect of environmental assessment. Improper use or disposal of these materials can have negative environmental consequences. Therefore, adopting accurate systems for monitoring inventory and consumption, along with implementing safe procedures for the storage, transportation, and disposal of materials, can reduce environmental risks and improve resource efficiency. In this context, artificial intelligence and smart medical systems can play an important role in supporting environmental assessment. By collecting data related to the consumption of energy, water, materials, and medical supplies, intelligent systems can analyze this data and identify inefficient consumption patterns. Predictive analytics can also be used to forecast future resource requirements, enabling healthcare institutions to improve planning and reduce waste. Smart monitoring systems can also be integrated with sensors and the Internet of Things to continuously monitor the performance of medical equipment and its resource consumption. These systems provide real-time data that can be used to detect malfunctions or abnormal operating conditions, allowing timely maintenance and reducing energy consumption resulting from the operation of inefficient equipment. Predictive maintenance can also contribute to extending the operational lifespan of equipment and reducing the need for premature replacement. The impact of environmental assessment also extends to the procurement stage of medical technology. The selection of healthcare equipment should not depend solely on price and medical performance but can also include a range of environmental criteria, such as energy efficiency, operational lifespan, ease of maintenance, recyclability, and the amount of waste generated during use. Adopting such criteria helps establish a more sustainable procurement policy that balances medical requirements with economic and environmental considerations. On the other hand, digital transformation can contribute to reducing some environmental impacts associated with healthcare and administrative procedures. The adoption of electronic medical records and digital systems for data management and communication can reduce reliance on paper. Similarly, telemedicine and electronic systems for managing appointments and medical records can reduce the need for certain types of travel, thereby contributing to lower resource consumption and transportation-related emissions. However, the application of smart technologies to achieve sustainability also presents several challenges. Digital devices, data centers, and intelligent systems themselves require energy, while the manufacturing and disposal of electronic equipment may generate environmental impacts. Therefore, digital sustainability cannot be achieved simply by adopting technology; rather, it requires a comprehensive assessment of the technology's life cycle and the selection of solutions that achieve an appropriate balance between healthcare benefits, cost, and environmental impact. Environmental impact assessment of medical technology represents an important step toward building more sustainable and efficient hospitals. By measuring resource consumption, monitoring waste, improving equipment efficiency, and adopting artificial intelligence and smart technologies, healthcare institutions can reduce their environmental impact without compromising the quality of healthcare. Integrating environmental criteria into decisions related to the procurement, operation, and maintenance of medical equipment can also contribute to achieving long-term sustainability. In conclusion, the future of healthcare depends not only on developing more accurate and intelligent technologies but also on developing technologies that are more efficient and environmentally responsible. Environmental impact assessment of medical technology represents a link between medical innovation and sustainability, enabling hospitals to provide safe and effective healthcare services while reducing resource consumption, minimizing waste, and strengthening environmental and social responsibility. Through the integration of medical technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainability principles, a more efficient healthcare system capable of addressing future environmental challenges can be developed.
