Developing Design Thinking Skills Among Architecture Students Prepared by: Assistant Lecturer Maryam Mohammed Musa This article explores the importance of developing design thinking skills among architecture students as a fundamental approach to enhancing their creative and analytical abilities and enabling them to address architectural and design challenges through scientific and innovative methods. Design thinking is an integrated process that begins with understanding users’ needs and analyzing project requirements, followed by generating ideas, developing architectural solutions, and testing them to achieve a balance between functional, aesthetic, and environmental considerations. The article highlights the role of educational curricula and architectural design projects in fostering these skills by encouraging students to study project sites, analyze their surrounding conditions, understand users’ needs, and explore functional and spatial relationships. It also emphasizes the use of drawings, plans, and three-dimensional models to develop and evaluate design concepts. Furthermore, problem-based learning, teamwork, and critical discussions within design studios are highlighted as essential approaches that provide opportunities for exchanging ideas, evaluating alternatives, and developing more efficient architectural solutions. The article also emphasizes the importance of integrating digital technologies and modern modeling and design software into architectural education. These tools expand opportunities for experimentation and visual representation, helping students connect conceptual ideas with practical applications. In addition, it highlights the instructor’s role in encouraging critical thinking and independent design decision-making by creating a learning environment that supports exploration, experimentation, and diverse perspectives, while providing constructive feedback to improve project development and overall quality. The article concludes that developing design thinking skills is essential for preparing architecture students to address contemporary architectural challenges. These skills enhance their ability to produce creative and sustainable architectural solutions that respond to human needs and environmental considerations, while contributing to the advancement of architectural education and strengthening the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
