The rapid advancement of smart vehicle technologies and artificial intelligence offers promising opportunities for developing assistive systems that enhance driving safety and monitor behavioral changes in individuals with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by changes in mood, energy, sleep, and behavior, which may, during certain episodes, affect attention, judgment, and decision-making abilities. Advanced driver monitoring systems equipped with intelligent cameras can analyze eye movements, head position, and attention levels while driving. Meanwhile, vehicle telematics systems provide valuable information about driving patterns, including sudden acceleration, braking behavior, and speed variations. These data can be utilized to investigate behavioral changes that may influence road safety. Wearable sensors can also contribute by collecting physiological data and information related to sleep patterns and daily activities. Such information may help identify deviations from an individual’s usual behavioral patterns. By integrating these data through artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, researchers can explore the development of personalized warning systems capable of detecting potentially risky driving behaviors. However, these behavioral and physiological indicators are not specific to bipolar disorder and cannot independently diagnose manic or depressive episodes. Therefore, the development of such technologies requires rigorous scientific studies and clinical validation to evaluate their accuracy and effectiveness. Protecting users’ privacy, ensuring data security, and obtaining informed consent are also essential considerations. In this context, biomedical engineering plays a significant role through its integration with artificial intelligence and mental health research. This interdisciplinary approach can support the development of innovative assistive technologies that combine behavioral analysis, physiological monitoring, and intelligent vehicle safety systems. Overall, smart vehicle technologies represent a promising research direction for personalized behavioral monitoring and improved road safety. Nevertheless, these systems should be considered supportive safety tools rather than substitutes for professional medical assessment, clinical diagnosis, or treatment.
