Iraqi universities have recorded an expanding presence in the latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, with 32 Iraqi universities included in the global ranking, compared with 25 universities in the 2026 edition—an increase of seven universities, representing approximately 28% growth.
Al-Mustaqbal University was ranked within the 1201–1400 global band, alongside the Islamic University, maintaining its presence in one of the world’s prominent university rankings, which assesses higher education institutions through a range of academic, research, international and industry-related indicators.
The 2027 edition evaluated 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it the most extensive edition of the ranking to date. The methodology is based on 18 performance indicators distributed across five key pillars: teaching and learning environment, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry and knowledge transfer.
The growing Iraqi participation reflects a continued upward trend in recent editions, with the number of Iraqi universities included rising from 22 in 2025 to 25 in 2026 and reaching 32 universities in 2027.
This expanding presence highlights the growing participation of Iraqi higher education institutions in international rankings and underscores the importance of continuing to enhance research quality, academic environments, international partnerships, and knowledge transfer to strengthen the global academic presence of Iraqi universities.
