Postmodern art represents one of the most significant transformations in contemporary art, contributing to a redefinition of the artwork by moving beyond traditional rules and styles and opening artistic practice to experimentation, imagination, and multiple meanings. Within this context, the dream has emerged as a fertile space for creativity because of its ability to transcend realistic logic and generate unfamiliar images, symbols, and visual relationships. This relationship was particularly evident in Surrealism, which explored the unconscious and dreams, and its influence later extended into various contemporary artistic practices. Artists began reconstructing reality through fragmentation, paradox, symbolism, metaphor, collage, and digital imagery. Modern technologies have further expanded the artist’s ability to create visual worlds that combine reality and imagination, particularly through video, digital art, and interactive media, transforming the dream from merely an artistic subject into a method of visual thinking and production. Postmodern artistic imagery no longer necessarily presents one fixed meaning; instead, it remains open to interpretation, allowing the viewer to participate in reconstructing its meaning according to personal experience and memory. In Arab and Iraqi artistic experiences, aspects of postmodernism have appeared through the use of symbolism, imagination, experimentation, and contemporary technologies, while being reformulated according to local cultural and social contexts. Therefore, the relationship between art and dreams in postmodernism does not represent an escape from reality, but rather a means of reconsidering, deconstructing, and revealing what lies beneath its visible manifestations. Art consequently becomes a space where reality meets imagination, consciousness meets the unconscious, and individual experience meets collective memory within a visual language that is open to thought, interpretation, and experimentation.
