Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of AL-MUSTAQBAL University, participated in the IAU–EAIE Internationalisation Leadership Dialogue, held on 8 September 2026 at The Sir Jim McDonald Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow, United Kingdom. The high-level dialogue, organised by the International Association of Universities (IAU) in cooperation with the European Association for International Education (EAIE), brought together university presidents and higher education leaders from around the world to discuss the future of internationalisation in higher education, address emerging global challenges, and exchange strategic experiences and perspectives on international academic and research partnerships. The event opened with welcoming remarks from the host university, followed by contributions from Dr. Hilligje van't Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and Professor Mervyn Baker, Executive Director of the European Association for International Education (EAIE). The programme also featured a keynote lecture entitled “Leading Internationalisation in Turbulent Times”, delivered by Sir Anton Muscatelli, President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The lecture explored the VUCA Prime leadership model and its application in navigating uncertainty and change in higher education through Vision, Understanding, Clarity and Agility, while also highlighting successful approaches to developing equitable and sustainable university partnerships. Participants further examined internationalisation markets and recent data on global trends in international student mobility and recruitment. Discussions also focused on the future of academic partnerships, partner selection mechanisms, joint academic programmes, research collaboration, and strengthening the principle of reciprocity in international university relations. Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi also took part in roundtable discussions addressing the reimagining of internationalisation in higher education, including the integration of internationalisation into curricula, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning and academic mobility, and virtual exchange as a modern and sustainable approach to strengthening international cooperation. On the sidelines of the dialogue, Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi held a meeting with Dr. Hilligje van't Land, Secretary General of the International Association of Universities, to explore prospects for future academic and research partnerships. He also presented her with a commemorative gift reflecting the richness of Iraqi heritage and civilisation. Additional bilateral meetings were held with leaders of participating academic institutions to explore opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange. The participation of the President of AL-MUSTAQBAL University reflects the University’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its international academic presence, advancing its strategic plans, expanding its global partnership network, and keeping pace with emerging developments in the internationalisation and governance of higher education.
