Al-Mustaqbal University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Reading in the United Kingdom during a delegation visit to the UK, with the aim of strengthening joint academic and research cooperation and exploring the possibility of launching a joint Master’s program in renewable energy and sustainability. The agreement opens new avenues for scientific collaboration and the development of postgraduate programs in fields related to energy, the environment, and sustainable development.
The delegation from Al-Mustaqbal University was headed by Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of the University, accompanied by Professor Dr. Qusay Al-Ahmadi, the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in the United Kingdom, and Assistant Professor Dr. Amin Kitab, Scientific Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering Technologies at Al-Mustaqbal University.
The delegation was received at the University of Reading by Claire Ballard, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa for International Student Recruitment; Professor Emmanuel A. Essah, Head of Environmental Engineering, Professor of Sustainable Technologies and Energy Resilience, and Director of the MSc Sustainable Built Environment Management Program at the School of the Built Environment; and Professor Irem Dikmen Toker, Professor of Construction Engineering and Management at the School of the Built Environment.
The visit included extensive academic and scientific discussions addressing prospects for cooperation in higher education and research, the development of joint research projects, and the exchange of academic expertise. The discussions also focused on developing joint postgraduate programs, particularly exploring the launch of a joint Master’s program in renewable energy and sustainability.
Assistant Professor Dr. Amin Kitab delivered a scientific presentation outlining the vision of Al-Mustaqbal University and the strategic directions of the College of Engineering Technologies. He highlighted the University’s advanced academic and research capabilities and modern infrastructure, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, sustainability, and climate change.
The presentation also highlighted Al-Mustaqbal University’s international achievements in sustainable development, including its global leadership in Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7): Affordable and Clean Energy. This achievement reflects the University’s commitment to leveraging knowledge and scientific research to support the transition toward sustainable energy solutions.
For his part, Professor Emmanuel A. Essah praised the scientific content of the presentation, commending Al-Mustaqbal University’s achievements in sustainability and research, as well as its advanced academic and research capabilities, which can provide a strong foundation for effective scientific collaboration between the two institutions.
The visit culminated in the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Al-Mustaqbal University and the University of Reading, establishing an institutional framework for developing joint cooperation. The MoU covers several key academic and research areas, including:
• Strengthening academic and research cooperation through joint research projects, scientific publications, conferences, seminars, and academic events.
• Exchanging academic staff, researchers, and postgraduate students to enhance skills and facilitate the exchange of scientific expertise and knowledge.
• Facilitating academic pathways and student recruitment by supporting admission opportunities for qualified Al-Mustaqbal University students to undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University of Reading.
• Developing joint educational programs and enhancing opportunities for student exchange between the two institutions.
• Exchanging academic resources and scientific publications and relevant educational materials in shared fields of specialization.
• Promoting cultural and intellectual exchange and providing opportunities for academic and intellectual development for students and staff of both institutions.
• Supporting international summer schools and short training courses, providing opportunities to participate in advanced scientific and professional programs.
This cooperation forms part of Al-Mustaqbal University’s vision of strengthening its presence within the international academic community, supporting innovation and scientific research in the fields of energy and sustainability, and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to clean energy, climate action, and quality education.
