AL-MUSTAQBAL University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, a campus of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from 24 to 26 August 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from universities and international institutions.
The AL-MUSTAQBAL University delegation included Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of AL-MUSTAQBAL University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering. The participation reflects the University’s commitment to strengthening its international presence and exchanging global expertise and best practices in sustainable campuses, green infrastructure, energy and water management, waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and sustainability-related research.
The workshop gained particular significance from being hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, one of the world’s leading examples of sustainable university development. In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the campus ranked first in Germany and fourth globally, while maintaining its position as Germany’s leading university campus in the ranking since 2017.
During the workshop, the AL-MUSTAQBAL University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, to discuss opportunities for cooperation, communication, and knowledge exchange in the field of sustainability in higher education. The delegation also presented the University’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable campus. A commemorative shield from AL-MUSTAQBAL University was presented to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to promote and support sustainability practices in universities worldwide.
The delegation also presented a commemorative shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in recognition of the University’s distinguished role in supporting sustainability and developing an internationally recognized model for sustainable higher education.
In addition, the University delegation honored Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environmental sustainability.
AL-MUSTAQBAL University’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to expanding international academic partnerships, benefiting from leading global sustainability practices, and strengthening its performance in international sustainability rankings and initiatives. It also highlights the University’s efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals and extend the impact of sustainability initiatives from the university campus to the wider community.
