Artificial intelligence applications have already transformed universities around the world by modernizing teaching and learning approaches, improving academic services, and enhancing institutional management. Their role has evolved far beyond the automation of routine tasks to include supporting evidence-based decision-making, analyzing educational data, and delivering innovative solutions that improve the student experience and enhance educational outcomes. One of the most significant opportunities AI offers to higher education is the creation of more flexible and interactive learning environments. Intelligent technologies enable the design of personalized learning pathways tailored to students’ abilities and individual needs, thereby improving academic achievement and reducing learning gaps. AI-powered learning systems also facilitate continuous monitoring of students’ progress and provide immediate feedback, enhancing the effectiveness of the learning process and encouraging self-directed learning. In scientific research, artificial intelligence represents a transformative advancement in knowledge production. It provides sophisticated tools for analyzing large datasets, identifying patterns and relationships, accelerating literature reviews, and assisting researchers in designing studies and interpreting research findings. These capabilities contribute to improving the quality and impact of scientific research while strengthening universities’ competitiveness in international academic rankings. University administrations also benefit from AI applications in areas such as admissions and registration, resource management, institutional performance analysis, and predicting student underperformance or dropout rates. These capabilities support evidence-based decision-making and contribute to achieving higher levels of institutional efficiency and effectiveness. Despite these promising opportunities, integrating artificial intelligence into higher education presents several challenges that require balanced and thoughtful solutions. Among the most important are the need to strengthen digital infrastructure, equip faculty members and administrative staff with the necessary competencies, enhance students’ digital literacy, and establish comprehensive legal and ethical frameworks governing the use of AI. Such frameworks should safeguard academic integrity, data privacy, and intellectual property rights while ensuring the responsible use of AI technologies. Another major challenge is maintaining an appropriate balance between leveraging intelligent technologies and preserving the central role of university faculty members. Regardless of its capabilities, artificial intelligence cannot replace educators in shaping students’ academic character, fostering critical thinking, and promoting ethical values and human interaction. Rather, AI should be regarded as a powerful tool that supports and enriches the educational process, not as a substitute for the educator.
