Al-Mustaqbal University hosted the fifth meeting of the ministerial committee overseeing the implementation of the UK–Iraq Academic Bridge Initiative, with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the British Council, and presidents of several public and private universities. The meeting was held as part of ongoing efforts to promote international academic cooperation and strengthen partnerships between Iraqi and British universities.
The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan, advisor to the minister of higher education and scientific research and chair of the ministerial committee for the initiative, in the presence of Dr. Richard Sanderson, country director of the British Council in Iraq; Mr. Ammar, programs manager at the British Council; as well as university presidents participating in the initiative and representatives of the ministry's Department of Scholarships and Cultural Relations.
The meeting commenced with an address by Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan, who reviewed the major achievements of the initiative since its launch in 2024. He emphasized the importance of further developing academic twinning programs and expanding academic and research collaboration between Iraqi and British universities to advance the higher education sector.
For his part, the president of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, welcomed the participating delegations and expressed the university's pride in hosting this important academic event. He reaffirmed the university's commitment to internationalization and strengthening collaboration with leading universities around the world. He also highlighted the university's most significant achievements in international rankings, academic accreditation, and strategic partnerships with global higher education institutions.
The meeting program included an introductory presentation on Al-Mustaqbal University, showcasing its modern infrastructure and its academic and research achievements. This was followed by a specialized presentation delivered by the University's Academic Supervisor, Prof. Dr. Muzaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, who reviewed the memoranda of understanding and strategic partnerships established with leading British universities, particularly the University of Nottingham and the University of Reading, in addition to presenting proposals aimed at further developing the Academic Bridge Initiative and expanding areas of mutual cooperation.
The meeting also featured a presentation by Dr. Muwaffaq Sajit, representing the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, followed by presentations from the presidents of the participating universities, who shared their institutions’ experiences in collaborating with British universities and discussed prospects for further development during the next phase.
The meeting concluded with scientific and evaluative discussions focused on developing a roadmap for strengthening research collaboration, expanding academic twinning programs, and promoting the exchange of expertise between Iraqi and British universities. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of higher education and reinforce the international standing of Iraqi universities.
By hosting this important ministerial meeting, Al-Mustaqbal University reaffirms its position as one of Iraq’s leading universities in advancing academic internationalization and fostering international partnerships that contribute to the development of higher education and scientific research in accordance with global best practices.
