The College of Education at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a cultural awareness activity in celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, observed annually on April 23. The event was held with the support of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Roudhan Salman, and was supervised and presented by the Head of the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, Professor Dr. Thanaa Bahaa Al-Din Abdullah.
The activity targeted the college’s academic and administrative staff and took place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 12:00 PM, at the headquarters of the Psychological Counseling Unit within the College of Education.
The event featured an educational lecture highlighting the significance of this global occasion, established by the UNESCO in 1995, to celebrate books as vessels of knowledge and as cultural bridges connecting generations. The lecture also addressed the symbolic importance of this date, marking the anniversary of the deaths of prominent literary figures in 1616, including William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.
Furthermore, the lecture explained the concept of copyright as a legal framework that protects intellectual and creative works. It outlined two main categories of rights: moral rights, which ensure proper attribution and protect works from distortion, and economic rights, which allow authors to benefit financially from their creations. It also reviewed key international agreements such as the Berne Convention and the TRIPS Agreement, as well as the role of the World Intellectual Property Organization in safeguarding intellectual property.
The activity also highlighted major global initiatives associated with this occasion, including the selection of Rabat as the World Book Capital for 2026, alongside efforts to promote reading culture through book distribution campaigns and the activation of school libraries, particularly in developing countries.
The lecture emphasized that protecting copyright is essential for fostering creativity and supporting the knowledge-based economy, especially in light of modern digital challenges such as piracy and unauthorized content sharing. It also called for the development of legislation to keep pace with these evolving challenges.
The event concluded with a call to reinforce daily reading habits among individuals, especially university students, highlighting the role of books in building awareness and intellectual growth. The activity aligns with achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
