How to clean your glasses?

An explanation of how to clean glasses
Cleaning your eyeglasses daily is the best way to keep them looking great and prevent lens scratches and other damage to your eyeglasses.

But there's a right way - and many wrong ways - when it comes to how to clean glasses.

🔷Steps to clean your glasses
Follow these tips to clean your eyeglass lenses and frames without the risk of scratching the lenses or causing other damage. These cleaning tips will help you keep your sunglasses, goggles and sports goggles in great shape, too.

1/ Wash and dry your hands well.

Before cleaning your glasses, make sure your hands are free of dirt, grime, lotion, and anything else that could transfer onto your lenses. Use a fat-free soap or dishwashing liquid and a clean, lint-free towel to clean your hands.

🔹2/ Rinse your glasses under a gentle stream of lukewarm tap water.

This will remove dust and other debris, which may help to avoid scratching the lenses while cleaning them. Avoid hot water, which may damage some of the eyeglass lens protection coatings.

🔹3/ Put a small drop of fat-free dishwashing liquid on each lens.

Most dishwashing liquids are very concentrated; So use only a small amount. Or put a drop or two on your fingertips instead. Use only lotion-free brands.

🔹4/ Gently rub the sides of the lenses and all parts of the frame for a few seconds.

Make sure to clean every part, including the nose pads and frame arms that rest behind your ears. Also, clean the area where the edge of the lenses meets the frame - dust, debris, and skin oils often accumulate here.

🔹5/ Rinse both sides of the lenses and frame thoroughly.

Failure to remove all traces of soap will result in smearing of the lenses as they dry.

🔹6/ Gently shake the glasses to remove most of the water from the lenses.
Check the lenses carefully to make sure they are clean.

🔹7/ Carefully dry the lenses and frame using a clean, lint-free towel.

Use a dish towel that has not been washed or dried with fabric softener (these substances can stain lenses).

The cotton towel that you use to clean delicate glassware is a good choice. Make sure the towel is completely clean. Dirt or debris stuck in the towel fibers can scratch your lenses; As well as cooking oil, leather oil, or the fat in the towel will stain it.

⚪️ Check the lenses again.
If any streaks or smudges remain, remove them with a clean microfiber cloth - these lint-free cloths are available at most eyewear or photography stores.

⚪️ To clean your touch glasses when you don't have the supplies listed above, try individual packs of disposable pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes. Specifically designed for use with eyeglass lenses.

Which brings us to a very important topic - what not to use to clean your glasses.

⚪️ Eyeglass cleaners and cleaning cloths
Spray eyeglass lens cleaners are available from where you buy your eyeglasses, or at your local drugstore or department store. These can be useful if you are traveling or do not have dishwashing soap and clean tap water available.

🔹 If tap water isn't available to rinse the lenses before cleaning them, use plenty of aerosol eyeglass cleaner to get rid of dust and other debris before wiping the lenses.

🔹If your lenses have an anti-reflective (AR) coating, make sure the eyeglass cleaner you choose is approved for use in anti-reflective lenses.

🔹When using individual packs of pre-moistened, disposable lens cleaning wipes, first check the lenses for dust or debris. To avoid scratches, blow any debris out of the lenses before wiping them.

A microfiber cleaning cloth is an excellent choice for cleaning eyeglasses. This cloth dries lenses very effectively and locks in oils to avoid staining.

But because it traps waste so effectively, be sure to clean the cloth frequently. Hand wash the fabric with fat-free dishwashing liquid and clean water; Allow the fabric to air dry.

How to remove scratches from glasses

Unfortunately, there is no magic cure for scratched lenses. Once you scratch your glasses, they're scratched and that's it.

Some products are designed to make scratches appear less noticeable - but these are mainly waxes that fade easily, and there are varying results, depending on the location and depth of the scratch. Also, these products often stain lenses that have an anti-reflective coating.
