The Department of Biology at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, held a scientific workshop for its students on Tuesday, 4 November 2026, entitled “Biological Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems: Indicators and Health and Environmental Impacts.” The workshop was presented by Assist. Lect. Mais Adi Mohammed at the Humanities Building.
The workshop addressed the concept of biological water pollution and its main sources, including pathogenic microorganisms and pollutants of biological origin. It also highlighted the biological indicators used to assess water quality and detect pollution levels, as well as their role in determining the suitability of aquatic systems for various uses.
The workshop further examined the health and environmental impacts of biological pollution, particularly the association of certain pathogenic microorganisms with disease transmission and their effects on human health. It also discussed the consequences for biodiversity and ecological balance in aquatic environments, emphasizing the importance of laboratory testing and continuous monitoring in the early detection of pollution sources and the reduction of associated risks.
The workshop aimed to raise students’ environmental and scientific awareness, introduce them to the scientific methods used to monitor biological pollutants and assess water quality, and strengthen their understanding of the relationship between water pollution, human health, and the safety of ecosystems. It also encouraged the adoption of scientific practices that contribute to protecting water resources and ensuring their sustainability.
This workshop is part of the scientific and awareness-raising activities of the Department of Biology, reflecting its commitment to linking theoretical concepts with contemporary environmental challenges and broadening students’ knowledge in microbiology, environmental science, and pollution, thereby supporting the preparation of scientific professionals equipped with the knowledge and awareness needed to contribute to environmental protection.
