As part of its ongoing academic activities and efforts to develop the specialised skills of students in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, the department organised a specialised scientific seminar entitled “Pressure Measurement: Modern Technologies and Their Role in Medical Applications.” About the Seminar and Organising Team The seminar was presented and directly supervised by: * Lecturer Dr. Amir Najah Saud * Assistant Lecturer Aya Fadhil Shareef The seminar aimed to enhance students’ scientific and engineering knowledge, introduce the latest pressure measurement technologies and sensors, and explain how they are integrated into modern medical systems to accurately monitor patients’ vital conditions. Scientific Topics and Content The seminar covered several specialised topics related to sensing technologies, including: * Principles of Pressure Sensors: Introducing the operating principles of pressure sensors and explaining how physical and mechanical changes are converted into electrical signals and processed using software systems. * Types of Medical Pressure Sensors: Exploring different types, including piezoelectric, piezoresistive, and capacitive sensors, and explaining their applications according to specific measurement requirements. * Biomedical Applications: Demonstrating the use of pressure sensing technologies in various medical devices and equipment, such as: * Arterial blood pressure monitoring devices, including invasive and non-invasive pressure monitoring systems. * Mechanical ventilators and airway pressure monitoring systems. * Hemodialysis machines and precision medical infusion pumps. * The Role of Biomedical Engineers: Emphasising the importance of calibrating measurement devices, ensuring high measurement accuracy, and maintaining patient safety standards in medical diagnosis. The seminar witnessed considerable attendance and interest from academic staff and students. It also featured interactive discussions and contributions that enriched the engineering and medical topics presented. Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This scientific seminar directly aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly: * SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: By supporting accurate vital-sign measurement technologies to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare and diagnostic services. * SDG 4 – Quality Education: Through strengthening specialised education and connecting theoretical knowledge with practical engineering applications. * SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: By encouraging innovation and keeping pace with modern technologies in the design of medical devices and systems.
