As part of its ongoing scientific activities and efforts to enhance the specialised knowledge of students in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, the department organised a specialised scientific seminar entitled “Strain Gauge Technology and Its Applications in the Medical Field.” About the Seminar and Organising Team The seminar was presented and directly supervised by: * Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Abdullah Mardas * Engineer Mohammed Abdul Karim Razouqi The seminar aimed to enhance students’ engineering and practical knowledge and bridge theoretical concepts in biomechanics and electrical measurements with advanced practical applications in biomedical engineering. Scientific Topics and Content The seminar covered several specialised topics related to mechanical strain sensors, including: * Introduction to Strain Gauge Operating Principles: Explaining how a strain gauge works based on changes in the electrical resistance of a conductor when subjected to mechanical stress or deformation. * Types and Classifications of Strain Gauges: Exploring different types of strain gauges and their integration into Wheatstone Bridge circuits to achieve high accuracy in signal processing. * Medical Applications of Strain Gauge Technology: Demonstrating its use in measuring force, pressure, and mechanical changes, particularly in: * Prosthetic limbs and devices for monitoring load distribution. * Blood pressure measurement sensors and biomedical systems. * Biomechanical devices used to study body movement and analyse the forces acting on bones and joints. * Advancing Medical Equipment: Highlighting the role of strain gauge technology in developing medical measuring instruments and equipment and improving the efficiency of diagnostic and rehabilitation systems. The seminar witnessed considerable attendance and interest from engineering staff and students. It also featured scientific contributions and questions that enriched the discussions with advanced engineering insights. Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This scientific seminar directly aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly: * SDG 4 – Quality Education: By promoting practical education and developing students’ specialised skills in biomedical engineering. * SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Through employing advanced technologies and sensors to develop medical diagnostic and rehabilitation devices. * SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: By encouraging innovation in the design of medical electronic and mechanical devices and systems.
