As part of its ongoing scientific activities and efforts to develop the academic and practical capabilities of students in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, the department organized a specialized scientific seminar entitled:
“Active and Passive Transducers: Working Principles, Differences, and Medical Applications.”
Seminar Organizers
The scientific seminar was conducted and directly supervised by:
* Asst. Lecturer Hiba Diyaa Abdul Amir
* Engineer Mohammed Abdul Karim Razouqi
The seminar aimed to enhance students’ scientific knowledge and develop their skills in understanding sensing and measurement technologies, while connecting theoretical concepts of biomedical signals with practical and real-world applications in biomedical engineering.
Scientific Topics and Content
The organizers presented a comprehensive overview of transducers and energy conversion technologies, covering the following topics:
* Introducing the concepts of Active Transducers and Passive Transducers, along with the physical principles underlying signal conversion.
* Explaining their operating mechanisms and fundamental differences. Active transducers generate electrical signals independently without requiring an external power source, such as piezoelectric transducers. In contrast, passive transducers require an external power source to detect changes in their electrical parameters, such as variable resistive, capacitive, and inductive transducers.
* Exploring the medical applications of transducers in biomedical measurement systems and equipment, including temperature sensors, blood pressure sensors, electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes, and ultrasound transducers.
* Highlighting the role of biomedical engineers in selecting appropriate transducers, signal processing, and accuracy analysis to ensure diagnostic reliability and safety.
The seminar witnessed considerable attendance and interest from academic staff and students, with scientific discussions and questions enriching its topics through advanced engineering perspectives.
Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This scientific seminar directly supports the University’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
* SDG 4 – Quality Education: Promoting applied learning and developing students’ specialized knowledge and skills in biomedical engineering.
* SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Contributing to the understanding and advancement of medical diagnostic and sensing devices to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.
* SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Encouraging innovation in understanding and developing medical electronic measurement technologies and systems.
