The Internet of Things (IoT) has become one of the most significant modern technologies, enabling physical devices to connect to the internet and exchange data, including smart cameras, wearable devices, household appliances, and industrial sensors. Despite its benefits in improving efficiency and simplifying daily life, continuous network connectivity exposes IoT devices to various cyber threats, making their protection essential. An IoT system consists of several key components, including devices and sensors for collecting data, communication networks for transferring information, data processing platforms for analysis, and user interfaces that allow monitoring and controlling connected devices. These technologies are widely used in smart homes, healthcare, agriculture, industry, and smart cities. IoT security aims to protect connected devices, networks, and data from unauthorized access by ensuring three fundamental principles: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This also requires securing device identities, controlling access privileges, updating software, and continuously monitoring device activities. IoT devices face several security threats, including weak passwords, malware, Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, eavesdropping, firmware manipulation, and unauthorized access. The Mirai Botnet attack is a well-known example of how devices with weak or default passwords can be exploited and transformed into networks used to launch large-scale cyberattacks. To strengthen IoT security, several protective measures are necessary, such as strong authentication and access control, data encryption, firmware updates, network segmentation, intrusion detection systems, and continuous monitoring to identify suspicious activities at an early stage. Cybersecurity is essential for ensuring the safe use of IoT technologies as their adoption expands across different sectors. A single compromised device may threaten an entire network, expose sensitive information, or disrupt critical services. Therefore, implementing comprehensive security practices is crucial to maintaining the safety and reliability of connected technologies.
