As part of the scientific activities organized by the Department of Biochemistry to encourage student engagement and develop academic competencies, Baqir Ali, a third-year student in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Science at Al-Mustaqbal University, presented a scientific activity focusing on Lipids, as part of the Lipids course taught by Ms. Hannadi Tahseen Muslim.
The activity addressed several scientific aspects of lipids, beginning with their chemical nature and molecular structure, followed by their different classifications and types, and extending to their biological importance and essential functions in the human body. It highlighted the role of lipids in energy storage, cell membrane formation, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, in addition to their involvement in various physiological and metabolic processes.
The presentation emphasized the relationship between the chemical structure of lipids and their biological functions, highlighting the importance of understanding these compounds in the study of biochemistry, nutrition, and human health. It also provided the student with an opportunity to conduct research, explore scientific information, and present specialized knowledge in an organized academic manner.
The activity aimed to encourage students to move beyond traditional learning approaches towards interactive, research-based education. It also sought to develop scientific thinking, analytical and communication skills, and the ability to connect theoretical concepts with biological applications.
This initiative contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by promoting scientific awareness of nutritional components and their role in human health, and SDG 4: Quality Education, through encouraging active learning, scientific research, and the development of students' academic competencies.
The Department of Biochemistry continues to support student-led scientific initiatives that promote an interactive educational environment and provide students with opportunities to strengthen their scientific and practical abilities.
