The laboratories of the Department of Biochemistry at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, witnessed a practical experiment conducted for second-year students as part of the Chemical Kinetics course. The experiment, entitled “Study of the Acid-Catalyzed Hydrolysis of Ethyl Acetate Using Hydrochloric Acid (HCl),” was supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Aseel Amer Hadi. This laboratory activity aimed to strengthen students’ practical understanding of chemical kinetics by connecting theoretical concepts with experimental applications. The experiment focused on investigating the kinetics of ethyl acetate hydrolysis in the presence of hydrochloric acid as a catalyst. It provided students with an opportunity to understand the influence of acid catalysis on the reaction rate and to examine the changes that occur throughout the reaction. The experiment also highlighted the relationship between reaction time and the progress of the chemical process, helping students develop a clearer understanding of the fundamental principles governing reaction rates. During the practical session, students became familiar with the chemicals, laboratory equipment, and experimental procedures required to carry out the reaction. They were guided through the preparation of the reaction mixture and the systematic monitoring of the reaction progress according to established laboratory procedures. Particular emphasis was placed on accurate measurements, careful observation, and recording experimental readings at specific time intervals to obtain reliable data for subsequent analysis. The experiment also explained the role of hydrochloric acid in catalyzing the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate. The acidic medium facilitates the reaction by providing a pathway that enables the hydrolysis process to proceed more rapidly. Through this practical application, students gained a better understanding of how catalysts influence reaction rates without being consumed in the overall reaction. The activity further introduced them to the experimental principles used to investigate catalyzed reactions and interpret the data obtained during laboratory work. In addition, the practical session contributed to developing students’ laboratory skills, particularly in handling chemical substances, using laboratory apparatus correctly, following experimental procedures systematically, and observing appropriate laboratory safety precautions. These skills are essential for conducting reliable experiments and obtaining meaningful scientific results. The experiment also reinforced the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, particularly in relation to reaction rates, catalytic effects, and the role of time in monitoring chemical transformations. By participating in this laboratory activity, students were encouraged to apply their theoretical understanding to experimental observations, analyze chemical processes, and appreciate the importance of precision and scientific methodology in chemical investigations. This laboratory activity reflects the Department of Biochemistry’s commitment to enhancing the practical education of its students and strengthening their scientific competencies in chemical kinetics. Through such experiments, the department seeks to provide students with valuable laboratory experience, deepen their understanding of chemical principles, and prepare them to perform experiments and interpret results accurately in accordance with established scientific standards.
