Presented by the instructor: Assistant Lecturer (M.Sc.) Wroud Raouf Abdul Hussein Department of Civil Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are among the modern technologies in the field of structural engineering, owing to their high tensile strength, light weight, and good corrosion resistance. Their use has contributed to the development of methods for strengthening concrete structures and improving their structural performance, while reducing the need to increase the dimensions of elements or replace them, which helps extend the life of structures and improve their safety. Properties of Carbon Fiber Composites These materials consist of high-strength carbon fibers bonded to a polymer matrix, most often epoxy resin. They are characterized by relative ease of installation, light weight, and the fact that they do not cause significant changes in the dimensions of concrete elements. Their efficiency depends on the quality of the concrete surface, the bonding material, and the execution conditions. Applications in Strengthening Concrete Structures Carbon fibers are used to strengthen reinforced concrete columns, beams, and slabs. They help confine columns and improve their structural behavior, while carbon plates and strips are used to increase the flexural or shear resistance of beams and slabs, according to design requirements. This technique is considered a suitable option for rehabilitating existing structures that need improved resistance without major changes to their dimensions. Role in Developing Strengthening Techniques Carbon fibers provide an advanced alternative to some traditional strengthening methods, such as concrete jackets and steel plates, owing to their light weight, relatively fast execution, and corrosion resistance. However, their use requires precise engineering design, proper surface preparation, and verification of bond efficiency, while taking into account the effects of temperature, fire, and environmental factors on the performance of the system. Conclusions and Recommendations Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites contribute to improving the performance of concrete structures and extending their service life when used according to sound engineering principles. The article recommends carrying out a structural assessment before strengthening, selecting the system appropriate to the nature of the element and the loads acting on it, and adhering to the requirements of design, execution, and inspection, in order to ensure the efficiency of the strengthening and to achieve structural safety and sustainability.
