As part of its commitment to strengthening practical engineering education and linking theoretical concepts with field applications, the Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a practical workshop entitled “Practical Applications of Elevation Transfer Using a Leveling Instrument (Level).” The workshop was presented by Assistant Lecturer Kawthar Haider Abdul Latif, with the participation of second-year Civil Engineering students.
The workshop aimed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of elevation transfer and explain how a leveling instrument (Level) is used to determine elevation differences between points. It also highlighted the importance of these measurements in surveying and engineering projects, particularly in determining ground elevations, setting out building sites, and carrying out road and infrastructure works.
The workshop included practical applications covering the identification of the leveling instrument’s components, its proper setup and adjustment, taking readings using a leveling staff, and recording field data. It also explained how these readings can be used to calculate elevation differences and determine the elevations of points in accordance with established surveying procedures.
Furthermore, the workshop provided students with an opportunity to perform the surveying procedures themselves, develop their skills in handling surveying equipment, and improve their accuracy in taking readings and recording results. These practical exercises contribute to enhancing their technical abilities and preparing them for the requirements of professional engineering practice.
This workshop is part of the Civil Engineering Department’s ongoing efforts at Al-Mustaqbal University to develop students’ practical skills and enhance their proficiency in using modern surveying instruments. It also promotes the integration of theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, contributing to the preparation of qualified engineers capable of meeting labor market demands.
