The Department of Biochemistry continues to deliver theoretical lectures on Nucleic Acids to third-year students as part of the approved academic curriculum for the current academic year. These lectures aim to strengthen students’ scientific knowledge and understanding of the fundamental biochemical processes associated with nucleic acids, which are essential biomolecules responsible for storing, transmitting, and expressing genetic information within living cells. The lectures cover the chemical structures of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), with particular emphasis on their basic components, including nitrogenous bases, pentose sugars, and phosphate groups. Students also explore the chemical bonds that contribute to the formation of these molecules and determine their structural characteristics and biological functions. Furthermore, the lectures highlight the relationship between the molecular structure of nucleic acids and their roles in essential cellular processes, including DNA replication, transcription, and translation. These topics provide students with a deeper understanding of gene expression, protein synthesis, and the molecular mechanisms that regulate cellular activities. The study of nucleic acids also establishes an important scientific foundation for understanding modern applications in molecular diagnostics, genetic analysis, biotechnology, and medical laboratory sciences. Through these theoretical lectures, the Department of Biochemistry continues to support students’ academic development, strengthen their understanding of fundamental biochemical concepts, and encourage them to connect theoretical knowledge with its practical applications in biological and medical sciences.
