As part of its efforts to promote applied scientific research and bridge academic knowledge with engineering and environmental challenges, the Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a scientific workshop focusing on a case study entitled “Enhancing the Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment Plants in Iraq Through Modern Technologies and Best Practices from Baghdad Municipality.” The study was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Uday Hamza Hamoud, with the participation of the Civil Engineering Department’s academic staff. The workshop addressed the key technical and operational challenges facing wastewater treatment plants in Iraq, highlighting the importance of developing operation and maintenance systems and adopting modern technologies to improve treatment efficiency, enhance the quality of discharged water, and reduce the environmental and public health impacts associated with inadequate plant performance. The case study also examined the experiences and practices implemented at wastewater treatment plants operated by Baghdad Municipality and explored opportunities to apply these practices to improve the performance of sewerage directorates in the targeted governorates, including Baghdad, Basra, Anbar, and Najaf. The discussion highlighted the role of modern monitoring and control systems, such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), measurement and sensing devices, pipeline inspection technologies, and laboratory equipment in improving operational efficiency, maintenance procedures, and technical monitoring. The workshop further emphasized the importance of developing technical personnel’s capabilities, facilitating knowledge exchange among relevant institutions, identifying the technological requirements of treatment plants, and preparing technical recommendations for their development. These measures can support future infrastructure planning, improve wastewater services, and promote the sustainable management of water resources. This workshop reflects the Civil Engineering Department’s commitment at Al-Mustaqbal University to advancing applied scientific research, encouraging knowledge exchange among academic staff, and promoting sustainable engineering solutions to Iraq’s environmental challenges. It also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
