Department of Forensic Sciences at Al-Mustaqbal University Organizes a Scientific Workshop on Packed Cell Volume (PCV)
As part of Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to strengthening practical education and developing students' scientific and laboratory skills, the Department of Forensic Sciences at the College of Science organized a scientific workshop entitled "Packed Cell Volume (PCV)," presented by Assistant Lecturer Abdullah Riyadh Suwaili.
The workshop focused on the fundamental scientific concepts of Packed Cell Volume, also known as Hematocrit (HCT), an important laboratory measurement used to determine the percentage of red blood cells in relation to the total blood volume. It also highlighted the significance of this measurement in evaluating health conditions and identifying certain hematological disorders.
The workshop included an explanation of the scientific principles underlying PCV testing, the use of centrifugation techniques to separate blood components, and the methods employed to read and interpret laboratory results. Factors affecting the accuracy and reliability of measurements were also discussed.
Furthermore, the workshop emphasized the clinical and diagnostic importance of PCV testing in assessing conditions such as anemia, dehydration, and increased red blood cell concentration, while highlighting the importance of laboratory quality standards and biosafety procedures.
The workshop aimed to enhance students' practical competencies, improve their ability to handle biological samples and laboratory equipment, and strengthen the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications, thereby preparing qualified graduates for professional careers in medical and forensic laboratories.
Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The workshop aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
- SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being: By promoting knowledge of blood testing and its role in identifying health disorders and supporting laboratory diagnosis.
- SDG 4 – Quality Education: By providing practical learning opportunities, developing students' scientific and laboratory skills, and improving the quality of higher education.
- SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: By strengthening students' technical and professional competencies and enhancing their preparedness for employment in medical, laboratory, and forensic fields.
This workshop forms part of the ongoing scientific activities organized by the Department of Forensic Sciences at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, reflecting the university's commitment to academic development, practical training, and the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals into its educational activities.
